Food Additives Testing with GLP | Preservatives, Colorants, Flavors

What is GLP?

Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) is an international standard that guarantees the accuracy, impartiality and reproducibility of work performed in testing laboratories. GLP ensures that test methods are applied correctly, data management is transparent and risks to human health can be assessed effectively.

The Importance of GLP in Food Additive Testing:

  • Scientific verification of the effects on human health
  • Ensuring compliance with legislation and international standards
  • Supporting product reliability and marketing approval

Food Additives and GLP Tests

1. Testing Preservatives: Preservatives are used to prevent food spoilage and inhibit microbial growth. For example, benzoates and sulfites are commonly used preservatives.

Test Methods:

  • Chemical Analysis: Determination of the amount of preservatives in food by methods such as HPLC and GC-MS.
  • Microbiological Tests: Evaluation of the effect of preservatives on microbial growth.
  • Toxicity Tests: Examination of potential side effects on human health.

2. Testing of Colorants: Colorants used to give foods an aesthetic appearance can be derived from natural and artificial sources. Artificial colorants such astartrazine (E102) are commonly used.

Test Methods:

  • Spectrophotometric Analysis: Determination of the concentration of coloring substances.
  • Purity Analysis: Determination of the purity of the colorant used.
  • Biochemical Tests: Examination of the effects of colorants on metabolism.

3. Testing Sweeteners: Sweeteners are substances that are used as sugar substitutes and add sweetness to products. Aspartame and sucralose are popular in this category.

Test Methods:

  • Chromatographic Analysis: Identification and quantification of sweeteners.
  • Sensory Analysis: Evaluation of the taste profiles of sweeteners.
  • Toxicological Tests: Examination of the effects of long-term use on health.

Test Process According to GLP Standards

  1. Test Planning: A test plan is prepared in accordance with the characteristics of food additives and relevant legislation.
  2. Sample Preparation: Samples taken from the products to be tested are stored and prepared correctly.
  3. Analytical Testing: Tests are performed in accordance with GLP requirements. Each step is documented and a traceable system is used.
  4. Reporting: All test results are reported in detail. These reports can be submitted for audit by national and international authorities.
