What is Crude Cellulose and Why is it Important?

Crude cellulose is a polysaccharide in the structure of plant cell walls. This compound is poorly or completely indigestible in the digestive tract of animals because they lack enzymes that break down cellulose. However, some ruminant animals (e.g. cows, sheep) contain microorganisms that can process cellulose for digestion.

The crude cellulose ratio indicates the fiber content of feeds and therefore how much energy and nutrients they can provide in the digestive tract of animals. TS 324 defines a standard test method used to determine the amount of crude cellulose in feed. This test allows the separation and quantification of cellulose from feed samples. The basic steps of the test are as follows:

  1. Sample Preparation: The feed sample is carefully mixed before being prepared for analysis and an appropriately sized amount is taken. This sample should be thoroughly dried before being sent to the laboratory equipment that will be used for the test.
  2. Acidic and Basic Treatment: The feed sample is treated with acidic and basic solutions to remove all components other than cellulose. This process destroys proteins, fats and other carbohydrates so that only cellulose remains.
  3. Filtration and Drying: The solutions and substances are filtered, then the residue obtained is heated until it reaches a constant weight by the drying process.
  4. Weight Determination: Finally, the crude cellulose obtained is weighed in the laboratory. This amount determines the total amount of crude cellulose in the feed.


Importance of Crude Cellulose Determination in Feed

Determination of crude cellulose content in feed provides several important advantages in assessing nutritional value:

  1. Determination of Feed Quality: Cellulose content indicates the fiber content and tissue strength of feeds. Feeds with high fiber content are more beneficial for ruminant digestion.
  2. Animal Nutrition and Productivity: The amount of crude cellulose in feed evaluates the suitability of feeds according to the digestive capacity of animals. Feeds with high cellulose content may be beneficial for ruminants, but may not be suitable for other animal species.
