Active chlorine is a chemical substance used as a disinfectant in drinking water and pool water. The disinfection efficiency of active chlorine is determined by its concentration and duration. By determining the amount of active chlorine, microbiological activity can be estimated.
When chlorine species interact with water, active chlorine is formed and acts as a disinfectant. The disinfectant effect depends on the amount of active chlorine in the water, the pH level, the contact time with microorganisms and the temperature of the water. The most important factor is the pH. The disinfectant effect of chlorine is higher at low pH.
The product types in which active chlorine can be used are specified as follows in the List of Substances Defined in Annex-A Product Type within the scope of the“Biocidal Products Regulation”.
