Reference Method for the Determination of Particulate Matter as PM10 in the Atmosphere

EPA 40 CFR 50 AppJ

The method under EPA 40 CFR 50 AppJ is to measure the mass concentration of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter equal to or less than a nominal 10 micrometers (PM 1O) in ambient air over a period of 24 hours to determine whether the primary value is reached and maintained. Measurement processes carried out by subjecting the PM 10 sample to subsequent physical or chemical analyzes are non-destructive.

The measurement principle can be briefly summarized as follows:

At a constant flow rate, air the ambient air into a specially shaped inlet where the suspended particulate matter is inertly separated into one or more size fractions in the PM 10 size range. The air is drawn with the sampler. Each size fraction in the PM1O size range is collected in separate filters as determined. Calculation of PM10 mass concentration in ambient air is performed by dividing the total mass of particles collected in the PM10 size range by the volume of sampled air.
