Aflatoxins are poisonous substances produced by certain types of fungi (molds) found naturally all over the world. Prolonged consumption of feed or food contaminated with aflatoxin causes serious health problems:

• Aflatoxins are potent carcinogens and can affect all organ systems, especially the liver and kidneys. They cause liver cancer and are linked to other types of cancer. It increases significantly in the presence of infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV).
• Aflatoxins are mutagenic (affecting DNA) in bacteria, are genotoxic and can cause birth defects in children.
• Although these data are yet to be confirmed, children may become stunted because other factors also contribute to growth retardation.
• Aflatoxins cause immunosuppression, therefore may reduce resistance to infectious agents (eg HIV, tuberculosis).
